JAPAN DAY FOUR
Day 4 is a bit all over the place. Raphael came out and explored some spots with his manager Damian, Pen (Leroy Jenkins Ltd. Clothing) and Lauren (L-Boogie). By the way, Ray is working on an ill video game called Ghetto Golf and Pen is helping him with the graphics tip. In case u didn’t know, Pen is an ill artist. Peep some of his work here: http://thablackrayon.blogspot.com. Anyway, on Day 4, I got some of the geometry and composition stuff worked out in my head. Japan is a real visual treat for anyone who shoots. We also took Ray to visit Santastic, Loveless, and Prada (the crazy glass building). Later, Lauren, Pen and myself went exploring in search of a good Japanese restaurant that wasn’t too expensive. We overheard some people speaking English on the street and so I decided to ask if they had any recommendations. The guy walked us over to Maruhachi where we drank Sake and ate a bunch of small plates of food. Later, our friend Phina from Sugar Headquarters (SHQ) linked us up with her friend from TIGHT and we stopped by but they were already closed. Oh, these photos also include my sticker bombing excursion and lots of randomness as well. Enjoy.
JAPAN DAY THREE
I love Tokyo! I have met such cool people. For the few days that I have been here, I’ve been having alot of trouble shooting TOkyo. The architecture and geometry is so different then any other place I have been to. The first couple of days photos really sucked. It wasn’t until about the the third day that I was able to make sense of it from a compositional stand point. I really dig the night photos of Tokyo that dont include people but instead focus on the quiet side of a city that is PACKED with people. This photo set also includes photos of Santa and Hori from SANTASTIC. These two guys were a great inspiration to me and I was honored to meet them both. Of course, L-Boogy is in the house. I owe a great deal to her support and believing in me. Thx L. Not sure I say it enough. Anyway, I hope u enjoy.
THE KING OF POP
My favorite Michael Jackson memory is my little sister playing Thriller over and over and over again when I was a kid. However the memories of Michael performing with his brothers as The Jackson 5 are the ones I treasure the most. They were literally the first artists I remember as a kid growing up in the 70′s. Michael in the lead and his brothers as backups represented a time, a moment, a sound that will stay with me forever. It’s ironic that his talent was so immense and so wide ranging that we sometimes forget how beautiful and distinctive his voice was. I always loved his ballads the most. “I’ll Be There“, “Never Can Say Goodbye” & the one I posted below “Ben” were just a few of my all-time favorite songs. Below that embed I posted the opening to the Jackson 5 animated series that I use to watch every day after school.

JAPAN DAY ONE
As some of you know, I am currently in Japan as Raphael Saadiq’s tour photographer. Ray is performing at the Tokyo Blue Note for 3 days. My trip started at 7am EST at The Laguardia Airport in Queens. I took a 2 hr flight to ATL International. Waited for 2hrs and boarded my plane to JP. The grueling 14hr flight to Narita International Airport was tough. I couldn’t sleep despite getting 3hrs sleep the night before and dropping a Melatonin. Anyway, once in Japan, the Blue Note people took good care of me. I met up with the band and we took a van to our hotel in Tokyo. The entire trip was about 17-18hrs. Crazy. Anyway, here are some pics along with commentary.
Wolves Outside My Apartment
Seems like anytime some director wants a cliche NYC elevated subway platform shot, or an urban but not too scary neighborhood, they come to the Marcy JMZ stop which is literally right at my doorstep. Seems like at least once a month there is a shoot here. I guess its kind of cool that they see the same charm I saw when I moved here. But it can be really annoying having bright lights and shouts of action and cut all night. It was hard enough getting used to the JMZ train running outside my window every 5 minutes. Anyway there are 4 or 5 blocks with only crew trucks and vans. Its for a film called “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” Seems like a pretty big production.
Also the crew had to gate off half the block because they are using real live wolves. My building entrance was within the parameters of the gate. I had to talk to 3 people and wait about 15 minutes to get in. Looks like I will be staying in on this Friday night. Check the footage I just shot from my Fire escape and my roof. I also embedded another famous scene shot at the same Marcy stop from the show Flight Of The Conchords

New Pop City
So I just uploaded a video that I shot where most of the fam gathered for a photo shoot for this upcoming book by the KDU’s Phil Knott called “State Of The Moment”. He is documenting creative NYC crews and asked us to come to his studio when we met on The Kid Cudi shoot. This is the most New Pop heads we’ve had in one place at one time so I had to bring the camera out as did Tone and Texas. So check the video and photos. As busy as we all are who knows when we will all get a chance to be in one place at one time like this again.

Girls Girls Girls Girls
I like subtle. It tends to speak louder than ..well.. loud people. There’s just no need to tell everybody-everything, all the time. I enjoy that my homeboy Christopher Owens didn’t even bother to mention that he is the frontman for Girls, the san francisco based band dominating summer playlists everywhere.

An ode to TONE.
Tone (as in PHOTO BY TONE, 1/3 of the founding members of THE NEW POP) has known me for a while. He was around when the ponytail only came to my shoulder. He was around when I started my first weekly with DJ Iron Lyon, DJ Kevy & Melo-X, called THE JAWN in 2007. And he’s known me since back when when I was a full time Production Manager on music videos & sorta still worked at 555-SOUL on Lafayette St. (R.I.P.)
And he’s stuck around. For as long as I’ve known him and as much work as he’s done for me, he STILL hasn’t asked me for a favor or a dime (I apologize if that infuriates some of you). But see I’d take a bullet to save his camera. And I’m pretty sure he’d take a bullet to save my dj laptop. It’s a friendship I value to the most high.
So here’s a little dedication poem about the evolution of “Jazzy + Tone” told through his pictures. Which of course can always be found on www.photobytone.com
WE BEGIN IN 2007. WHEN THE BEGINNING OF THE BEGINNING WAS BEGINNING:

TONE CAME ON THE STRENGTH TO SHOOT MY FIRST NYC PARTY, “THE JAWN”:

AS WELL AS WHEN THE PONYTAIL WAS IN IT’S EARLY DEVELOPMENT:

NEXT WE MOVE TO EARLY 2008. HERE WE HAVE A DOUBLE SHOT (AND I MEAN “TEXAS & TONE” SNAPPING A PHOTO AT THE SAME TIME, THOSE DRINKS WERE DEFINITELY NOT ALL MINE ![]()

TONE CONTINUES TO DOCUMENT THE FOUNDATION OF “JAZZY + MELO”:

THE NIGHT WE ALL ESCAPED TO RICE & PEAS IN PHILLY:

TONE WAS THERE FOR THE 1ST EVER ELECTRIC PUNANNY PARTY (MAY 2008):
(take note of the 4 inch growth de la ponytail)

THEN TONE AND I DID A SECRET PHOTOSHOOT WHICH WE STILL HAVEN’T TOLD ANYONE ABOUT! LOL:

AND THEN WE DID ANOTHER SECRET PHOTOSHOOT! WHAT IS WRONG WITH US?!?

ELECTRIC PUNANNY THEN MOVES TO IT’S CURRENT HOME, SWAY:

MELO-X + I GET SOME PHOTOS TAKEN THERE:

AND WE APPRECIATE OUR FANS TILL DEATH DO US PART:

AND EVEN IN THE GRIND OF 09, TONE CONTINUES TO COVER ALL THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER:

FIRST PERFORMANCE OF MINE AT ELECTRIC PUNNANY (JAN 2009):

WITH “THE GAMES, THE HUSTLE, THE TOWNS, THE JOURNEY. THE DAMES, THE SCUFFLES, THE CROWDS, THE STORIES” (lyric that i stole from Iron Lyon’s song 6 BILLION WAYZ from his album TIME CAPSULE (shameless plug!!!)

TONE CONTINUES TO SUPPORT EVERYTHING I DO, AND I COULDN’T BE MORE GRATEFUL <3

ROBOTS DON’T SLEEP
UGGGGHHHH i can’t belieeve i effing slept on hearing Robot Koch play at Coco66 last niGHT!! For those of you who don’t know, Berlin based producer Robot Koch is the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed band Jahcoozi and post rock/hiphop outfit The Tape vs RQM. He’s the illest. Here’s his latest ep AFTERSHOCKS, a collab with my future baby daddy, Cerebral Vortex.
A Mellow Life
Once we leave our boxes, and explore different parts of the world: We come back in a peaceful state of mind. Calm. Knowledgeable. Strong. Confident.
My whole point is, I love Melo’s vibe in these photos and it shows me where he is mentally: & where he will be in the future. Whenever we exchange artistic energy, its always amazing.
I just had de ja vu!
Check him out here: All Things Melo-X
