Our iPhone love affair
So my iPhone love affair is growing. Today I met up with an old friend Vanissa who is an illustrator and photographer (Vanissa was the first feature ever on TheNewPop) and we discovered that we have a mutual love affair with the low-fi look and feel of the iPhone photos. Despite the iPhones many camera limitations (like no flash or zoom capabilities) the images look more like film than most digital images I have seen. Today Vanissa introduced me to some new camera apps and we spent hours shooting each other and just having a ball.
love you V!!!

Elle (Wilhelmina Models) X Fashion Photoshoot

On a hot summers day we trucked a very young Wilhemina model Elle (from Oregon) to my current neighborhood Bushwhick, Brooklyn for a photo-shoot for her look book.
I was inspired by her youth, and her bratty girl looks. I played with a bad girl that can transcend location (from the suburbs to the city), her sex appeal isn’t vulgar, she look sweets & innocent while maintaining her bad girl virtues.

Sampling Amen
I came across this educational video about one of the most sampled tracks of all time … and I wanted to share it and talk a bit about sampling. Sampling in music is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or as a different sound recording of a song. With the coffers of music overflowing with gems to plunder, I urge you as artists while you are standing on the shoulders of giants not to do anything that will cause you to fall. Do not just use it and say a prayer no one will notice. Especially, if you plan to exploit the material commercially, identify the rightsholders and clear any sample you use even if its only 2 seconds to ensure that you have a legally viable product unless … (a) it is already in the public domain or (b) if the defense of fair use can be applied. When in doubt consult an attorney.
“This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the “Amen Break,” a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music — a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison’s 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.”

Poppa New Pop on Fox TV
My dad was interviewed by Fox TV for a story on cell phones and cab drivers. He is the first and last driver interviewed, with another soundbyte in the middle. If you knew pops you would know what a character he is. My pop’s said that when the reporter approached him he introduced himself as “Speedy McGreedy”. And by the end of the interview even the NYPD standing on the corner were cracking up. What a ham my dad is. Of course they only edited in what they needed but you will get the idea.
You have to be a character to be driving in this city for over 35 years and still loving it. Over 13,000 Cabs in NYC and they find my dad. Not so much a surprise as it is good journalistic instincts, as he is pretty much the classic old school NYC Taxi driver. Also check the link below of another classic NYC character we interviewed here at The New Pop that reminds me allot of my dad. Frenchie.
