New Pop Vintage 2006 – Afrokinetic

So I am finally getting around to uploading some old New Pop videos to YouTube. Something I avoided in the past due to the terrible YouTube compression standards. Diggin’ through the old vids I found this gem.

This video really brings back some old memories. It represents the very, very early days of New Pop back in 2006.  This is one of the first parties I ever covered.  It took place at a beautiful indoor/outdoor venue on Kent ave called Miss Williamsburg.  It is now torn down I’m guessing due to gentrification.  This scene had very little if anything to do with the Scene that I eventually fell into. These are folks who I wish I had paid more attention to and maintained relationships with.  Folks like Amon Drum, Ben Moore, Chris Annibell (who produced Afrokinetic and is interviewed in this piece), Mona, Nikolai and so many really good folks. They were in it for the love of music and friendships as opposed to the fame.  I should have done more to keep them close.  I documented allot of great moments with these guys and I regret moving on the way I did.  The scene I moved into put me on the map and was great for my ego, but for the most part it was and still is very shallow and self involved.

I am at a stage in my life where I am trying to reconnect with good people who I didn’t appreciate the way I should have. Unfortunately sometimes people move on, things change, and you just can’t pick up where you left off.  I don’t know if this would be the case with this group, if it is at the very least I’ll have these videos as a valuable memory of what was and a more valuable lesson as to what should be.
