I am a big fan of the film by Michel Gondry “Be Kind Rewind” starring Jack Black & Mos Def. This film introduced the concept of sweded films. Sweded films are remakes of Big Budget movies done in the most DIY way possible. In the film Be Kind Rewind the Jack Black character inadvertently erases all the VHS tapes in the store while the boss is away. In order to avoid getting in trouble the store manager played by Mos Def decides to recreate the erased movies using a process he calls Sweding. He tells his customers that the remade tapes come from Sweden as an excuse for the higher rental fees and longer wait times. (Hence the name Sweded). It’s very Abbott & Costello, but still a very endearing and clever film.
The other day I ran across this video by Pushit films of a sweded version of The Dark Knight. I thought it captured the spirit of the Be Kind Rewind swedes really well. I am not exaggerating when I say that you will probably find more creativity in one of these swedes than 50 big budget music videos.
