New Pop Vintage 2008 – Art Basel Miami

With the start of Art Basel 2010 tomorrow, I thought I would revisit my first visit to Art Basel in 2008.  2009 wasn’t as good as the year before.  I won’t be attending this year and I can only hope that its growing popularity doesn’t ruin the vibe.  Here is the 3 part series from 2008 Art Basel Miami.  Included are interviews and performances from Jose Parla, Ellis G, A.R.E Weapons and Adult.

GAMER GEEK ALERT! – HEADCRABBED

Here is one in a series of teasers for an upcoming feature length film called Indie Game The Movie which is about video games, their creators and their craft. As a filmmaker/video editor with barely enough time or desire to do much more than shoot and edit, there will always be a place in my heart for socially awkward geeky programmers toiling away at their keyboards for hours on end.  For more information on this film log onto indiegamethemovie.com

Photo Nerd Alert! Leica – Chiun-Kai Shih

Photographer Chiun-Kai Shih paid a visit to the Leica studio during Photo Plus East to demonstrate the Leica S – System, as well as share with us why he is so passionate about photography.  Chiun-Kai or “Chunky” as he is known on set has had his work published in various Conde Nast Publications including Vogue, InStyle, Entertainment Weekly, Chicago Sun-Times, The New York Times and VIBE. This is the first in a series of interviews I am doing for Leica focusing on well known photographers. For the full interview log onto the Leica Blog.

New Pop Vintage 2007 – Kareem Black & White

One of my favorite profiles featured Photographer Kareem Black.  In 2007 Kareem was at the center of a scene that I was suddenly discovering as a videographer.  At the time things were happening relatively fast for me and I tended to keep everyone at arms distance.  Kareem was someone who because of his talent, his experience and his success provided me with keen insight on navigating the scene and avoiding the stumbling blocks that seem to devour artist after artist.

I am not sure if he realized how much of what he said in this very interview (Especially part 2) still provides me with a blueprint for success as a new media artist.  Allot can be said about Kareem, but you can’t say he isn’t always on his game. Here it is in two parts, Kareem Black & White

Most ironic moment in part 2 at 4:17 right as Kareem says “downtown’s growing up’ someone walks by on cue in what looks like a bull fighting outfit.

Photo Nerd Alert! Leica – Scott Geffert

So my second entry for the Leica series comes from Scott Geffert the president for the Center of Digital Imaging inc. I caught up with Scott at Photo Plus East 2010 where he discussed some of his innovative approaches to international imaging standards.   Sorry about the echo in the room my location options were limited.

New Pop Vintage 07 – A Day in the life of Jules Kim

Here is a profile we did back in 2007 profiling Jules Kim founder of the Bijules Jewelry line. In this episode Jules chats it up with Kareem Black, tells us a creepy gym story, talks about beautiful people, and works on her upcoming showcase. All told in reverse order.

TINY FEATURE SATURDAY’S – The Third & The Seventh

This weeks entry to TFS is a film by Alex Roman that is absolutely unreal.  Alex describes it as

“A FULL-CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art across a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way. Sometimes surreal.”

The visuals are mind-blowing but also pay close attention to the sound editing. It is a listening experience reminiscent of THX 1138 or 2001 A Space Odyssey. I ask you to please resist your A.D.D. tendencies and allow this film to play to the end. After all that is why we present these longer format films on Saturday, you will not be disappointed.  And please FULLSCREEN it.

Also I would like to thank BECOME.COM for featuring TheNewPop in it’s Best of the Web series.  Here is an excerpt.

“More than anything else I want people to appreciate the emerging viral filmmaker as the new kid on the block. Ironically my own films are secondary to that goal. Creatively I tend to either make my videos entirely for me, or I make them entirely for a client. When I find a happy medium in that spectrum I think my focus will shift from promoting the medium to promoting myself.”

Thanks guys.

PRESS PAUSE – ian MOURIER

This is the best surf video I have ever watched which isn’t saying much since the most surf footage I have ever seen in one sitting is in the Lords of Dogtown documentary.  Ian Mourier does a great job combining motion graphics, what looks like tilt shift photography(probably done in post) and magic bullet effects to make one rad surf video.  My favorite part is the stuff shot in black and white at the beginning.

Helvetica in Motion

Here is a short animation by Evan Shuster about the widely used sans-serif typeface Helvetica. The audio is taken from the documentary of the same name. It’s an elegant explanation as to why we love this font so much.

Charles & Rachel – Coolest Wedding Video Ever!

If you didn’t know there is a stigma attached to documenting weddings.  Especially if you’re a scene photographer or videographer capturing the coolest of the cool in the downtown clubs and Brooklyn Lofts. As wedding videos go, it’s document at your own risk. If you’re not careful you might just get your hipster pass revoked.  As a result the best tend to only shoot weddings for friends and the occasional client. After which they are discreetly passed to the client in some digital back alley in the hopes that it disappears into digital anonymity.  Some however like the recent Dj Sanchez wedding posted on Lastnightsparty go against contemporary wisdom and put it all out there.  It should be mentioned that it was posted with a disclaimer “Even DJ’s get married” as if to highlight the reason for this particular exception. The fact is when you break it down in terms of the elements of storytelling there are few things more rewarding than documenting a wedding.  Great locations, dramatic costumes, family drama, and intense love.  And the clients tend to be less critical than corporate clients granted you capture a few key moments.

Sounds like all we need is someone who is willing to embrace the Wedding video and make it theirs.  Well someone did.  Today I came across a wedding video from A.G. Garza that was quite good.   A.G. specializes in the wedding video and I say good for him.  I posted one of his videos below.  Cool edits, terrific framing and I love the dolly shots even if they are a bit overdone (I am sure his clients had no complaints).  All in all I have never seen such a high level of production value in a wedding video.

Photography is described by many as the medium of our time.  It’s hard to disagree with that statement. Check out this CNN video that discusses the emerging popularity of photography as an art form shot during Fotoweek DC.

TINY FEATURE SATURDAYS – Skateistan:To Live and Skate in Kabul

So I decided to start a new series called TINY FEATURE SATURDAY’S.  These will consists of viral videos that are 5 minutes or longer.  I think that the inability for many of us to view anything on the web longer than 2 minutes is strongly correlated to our busy weekday schedules. The weekends on the other hand have given birth to Saturday morning cartoons, brunches, antique shopping and many other laid back activities, and starting today we can add Tiny Feature Saturday’s to that list.

The first video in this series is a documentary called Skateistan.  It is directed by Orlando Von Einsiedel and follows a group of skater kids in Afghanistan who find a bit of solace in the bleak backdrop of war.

Photo Nerd Alert! – Leica S System/Photo Plus East

I was recently asked to document a demonstration of the Leica S Systems at Production Central Daylight Studios for Photo Plus East 2010.  Ever since I switched from my Panasonic DVX camcorder (With a Leica Lens) to my DSLR camera I have become a bit of a photography nerd myself.  I got to meet and interview some pretty smart folks in the field including renowned photographer Chiun-Kai Shih.  I learned allot talking to these folks and will post a couple of those interviews in the upcoming days.  For now here is a general overview of the days events posted by the good folks at Leica.

Here is a really simple and sweet melody called “Without Your Oar to Row” from the musician Joe Grass.  It was filmed by Derrick Belcham for the Take Away Show series on the blogotheque website.  The folks at blogotheque are really good at working with filmmakers who can enhance a beautiful musical moment without being intrusive.

2010 NYC Marathon – My Photo/Video Recap

Watching the NYC marathon on TV has been something I have been doing all my life. This Sunday it suddenly occurred to me that for the past 5 years I only live a couple of blocks away from the Williamsburg part of the course. I grabbed my camera and thought I would check it out in person for the first time. The footage I got was pretty random with no real narrative so I decided to edit it with a monologue about Marathons by Craig Ferguson. I also posted some photos below.

TimeScapes – Rapture

Here is a cool trailer for an upcoming film by Tom Lowe called TimeScapes – A Modern Portrait of the American Southwest.  It may seem like a one-trick pony sort of thing, but oh how that one note is played so brilliantly in this trailer. The visuals are nothing short of breadth-taking.
