New Pop Vintage 2006 – Love Brigade
In 2006 I approached Alyssa Key the founder of a new boutique Love Brigade about doing a short documentary about her company as a DVD release. At that point I was shooting web videos for a little over a year and wasn’t quite convinced that the web was a medium that people would embrace for watching films. At the time I started producing web video content in late 2004 Youtube hadn’t even been created yet and most videos on the web were hosted on individual sites and servers all over the net. Other than Atom Films which was mostly a niche group of filmmakers seeking traditional distribution, there wasn’t really a platform for serious filmmakers to exhibit their work to non filmmakers. It took over a year for me to embrace the potential.
Fast forward to the summer of ’06 while shooting the folks at Love Brigade when after much thought I finally decided to forego traditional distribution for the web. It was a decision that immediately felt right, and for almost 4 years particularly in the downtown scene I enjoyed having this playground pretty much to myself. The Love Brigade series will always have a special place in the New Pop archives because it was where I came upon the proverbial fork in the road. Here are the first 3 episode in the Love Brigade series, episode 3 being my favorite. You can find the rest by following my youtube link.

Tiny Feature Saturdays – A Trinidad Teen
Trinidad & Tobago has one of the highest murder rates in the world. I am a first generation Brooklynite of Trinidadian heritage, so I am very aware of just just how violent it is. Tragically a cousin I knew lost his life over there to this type of violence. According to my folks it wasn’t that long ago that violent crime was such a rare occurrence that any incident would be the talk of the entire island, but now according to the director’s vimeo page;
“Trinidad & Tobago’s homicide rate rised 38% in 2008 and in 2009 overtook Jamaica as caribbean homicide capital. Rates are measured against population. 30 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 08′, one of the highest murder rates in the world. These figures are from the Economist (caribbean national) and United States State Department.”
Here is a beautifully shot documentary by Glen Milner focusing on some of the tough choices Trinidadian youth face, and how sports play a role.

The Making of “Null”
Here is a cool time-lapse video of some artist at work. According to their vimeo page…
“NULL is a shared dream scape that
was created by three creative entities.
The entire structure was built by only
using the geometry of a triangle.
The triangle symbolizes the three
entities working together to realize
one objective.”

New Pop Vintage 2008 – Writers Block
In 2008 the artist RIP MC approached me to document a spoken word event produced by a collective of artist called Writers Block. This event held at The Bowery Poets club was all the buzz on the scene, I was excited to see what all the fuss was about. From the moment I entered the establishment you could feel the energy in the air. It reminded me of the late 90′s Poetry Slam scene at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe. On this particular night Theophilus London was the featured artist. We had featured Theophilus on a few of our webisodes and I had listened to his much hyped mixtape Jam, but I didn’t know what to expect from his live act. That night he gave an energized performance that blew everyone away. To this date this is one of the most spiritual and energized events I have ever documented.

Panasonic Lumix TV commercial
Many snobby videographers (myself included) love to poke fun at the sudden influx of photographers and scenesters to the world of video. The invention of the DSLR video cameras opened the floodgates for novice filmmakers to encroach on our scene man. Well it seems like Panasonic has taken a shot at the novice photographer with a very funny ad featuring the new Panasonic Lumix point and shoot camera. Welcome to my world Shutterbugs.

Mashup – Michael Jordan Response to Lebron Commercial
If you haven’t been following the Lebron James drama that has been going on for the past year or so this may not make much sense to you. A couple of months ago I posted the Lebron James commercial What Should I do which was a response to all those who criticized his Decision. This commercial brought on even more criticism because it was seen as further proof that Lebron just didn’t get it. Well someone posted a video mashup using an old Michael Jordan commercial to respond to Lebron’s ad. It is pretty brilliant because it expresses through MJ’s voice the main accusation that Lebron is full of excuses. It is something like this that makes me really appreciate the power of the web.

As if to Nothing
Here is a pretty powerful excerpt from a larger work by Andreas Templin titled as if to nothing. According to his website “As if to Nothing comprises of a selection of statistical data of the earth and its population. This data, created by various governmental and intergovernmental sources and displayed in a specific and subjective interdependency” This piece reminds me of the cerebral flash art pieces that use to make up the artistic web landscape in the late 90′s early 2000′s. Indie Game: The Movie – Growing Up Edmund
This is another video from my new favorite viral series promoting the upcoming feature length documentary Indie Game: The Movie. This episode profiles a prolific gamer Edmund McMillen. He talks about his inspiration behind the game Aether, and how feeling isolated as a child inspired him to create his characters. Directed by James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot this film is a fascinating look into the mind of the indie game creators. They are truly the Harvey Pekar’s and Robert Crumbs of our generation.
