Life @theglasslands “Azz Everywhere!”

So Last night I headed over to Glasslands in Williamsburg cause I heard Spank Rock was performing. As I arrived this guy spots my camera and asks me if I am shooting. Turns out he is Rusty Lazer, the DJ for the main act tonight which isn’t Spank Rock. He then tells me that I have to shoot his artist Big Freedia. Says ‘her show is insane.’ I heard it a million times from people looking for free press. Usually I have no problem with this but this time I was more hesitant to shoot another performance especially one following Spank Rock because I only had 30 minutes of tape left and wanted to use the remaining 30 minutes shooting the Spank Rock set. Saving time for Freedia would mean I could only dedicate a few minutes to Spank’s show. I decided to take the risks, I could only think that If I am going to ration my Spank Rock coverage Big Freedia better be good. And why is Spank Rock opening for this person I never heard of anyway?

Well kids, turns out Big Freedia is the best show I shot since the Theophilus London “Writers Block” episode. Freedia even had the too cool for school art students shaking their asses like we were in East Flatbush. How does one “sissy rapper” inspire so much ass shaking in this world of cool?!!! At the end of the night I kindly thanked DJ Rusty (the second polaroid in gallery) for giving me the Heads up. Also big thanks to Venus & Ojay for taking care of everything.

An ode to TONE.

Tone (as in PHOTO BY TONE, 1/3 of the founding members of THE NEW POP) has known me for a while. He was around when the ponytail only came to my shoulder. He was around when I started my first weekly with DJ Iron Lyon, DJ Kevy & Melo-X, called THE JAWN in 2007. And he’s known me since back when when I was a full time Production Manager on music videos & sorta still worked at 555-SOUL on Lafayette St. (R.I.P.)

And he’s stuck around. For as long as I’ve known him and as much work as he’s done for me, he STILL hasn’t asked me for a favor or a dime (I apologize if that infuriates some of you). But see I’d take a bullet to save his camera. And I’m pretty sure he’d take a bullet to save my dj laptop. It’s a friendship I value to the most high.

Fashion and Queer undercurrent at Sway ONCE A MONTH!

What happens when you take ROXY COTTONTAILS biggest “profiling” Hip Hop party and infuse it with Queer hosts (Contessa) and DJ’s (Telfar and Kingdom from MR. BLACK’S CASTLE SATURDAYS) ?!!! You get a melange of “Industry” and/or Underground party people coming out of the wood work.
Typically Sway is known for it’s Mondays Electric Punanni, and Rice and Pea’s but something was missing for fashion hip hop heads.
Adding elements of queer friendly, fashion forward and Industry thinking – we get a balance of crazy partying and the ability (which Sway Mondays was missing for a while) NETWORKING.

With that being said, being involved on a Sway Monday that speaks to me, makes me very happy to be apart of a creative scene.
