TINY FEATURE SATURDAY’S

Tiny Feature Saturday’s – Russ Chimes “Midnight Club EP”

This video titled “Midnight Club EP” from the UK group Russ Chimes is a three part mini movie that has an “Alpha Dog” meets Daft Punk “Discovery” story line that keeps you on the edge of your seat.  Despite a storyline that pushes the outer-limits of believability and a cookie cutter albeit entertaining trio of dance tracks, the skill used in revealing the plot-line, along with the slick camera work and attractive cast makes this one worth watching.  Director Saman Keshavarz does a great job building drama without using a word of dialogue. The cinematography of Justin Gurnari really draws the viewer in, and the editing of Nate Tam is quick and cool.

Tiny Feature Saturdays – A Trinidad Teen

Trinidad & Tobago has one of the highest murder rates in the world.  I am a first generation Brooklynite of Trinidadian heritage, so I am very aware of just just how violent it is.  Tragically a cousin I knew lost his life over there to this type of violence.  According to my folks it wasn’t that long ago that violent crime was such a rare occurrence that any incident would be the talk of the entire island, but now according to the director’s vimeo page;

“Trinidad & Tobago’s homicide rate rised 38% in 2008 and in 2009 overtook Jamaica as caribbean homicide capital. Rates are measured against population. 30 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 08′, one of the highest murder rates in the world. These figures are from the Economist (caribbean national) and United States State Department.”

Here is a beautifully shot documentary by Glen Milner focusing on some of the tough choices Trinidadian youth face, and how sports play a role.

TINY FEATURE SATURDAY’S – The Third & The Seventh

This weeks entry to TFS is a film by Alex Roman that is absolutely unreal.  Alex describes it as

“A FULL-CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art across a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way. Sometimes surreal.”

The visuals are mind-blowing but also pay close attention to the sound editing. It is a listening experience reminiscent of THX 1138 or 2001 A Space Odyssey. I ask you to please resist your A.D.D. tendencies and allow this film to play to the end. After all that is why we present these longer format films on Saturday, you will not be disappointed.  And please FULLSCREEN it.

Also I would like to thank BECOME.COM for featuring TheNewPop in it’s Best of the Web series.  Here is an excerpt.

“More than anything else I want people to appreciate the emerging viral filmmaker as the new kid on the block. Ironically my own films are secondary to that goal. Creatively I tend to either make my videos entirely for me, or I make them entirely for a client. When I find a happy medium in that spectrum I think my focus will shift from promoting the medium to promoting myself.”

Thanks guys.

TINY FEATURE SATURDAYS – Skateistan:To Live and Skate in Kabul

So I decided to start a new series called TINY FEATURE SATURDAY’S.  These will consists of viral videos that are 5 minutes or longer.  I think that the inability for many of us to view anything on the web longer than 2 minutes is strongly correlated to our busy weekday schedules. The weekends on the other hand have given birth to Saturday morning cartoons, brunches, antique shopping and many other laid back activities, and starting today we can add Tiny Feature Saturday’s to that list.

The first video in this series is a documentary called Skateistan.  It is directed by Orlando Von Einsiedel and follows a group of skater kids in Afghanistan who find a bit of solace in the bleak backdrop of war.
