New Pop Vintage 2008 – “Pop Goes Contessa LES”
From our Pop Goes Contessa series this episode featuring Theophilus London takes place in the L.E.S. I decided to post this as a tribute to “The Bench” at American Apparel which is being removed. Oh the memories.
If you didn’t know the history of the bench here is a little background courtesy of NYracked.com
“Not only is American Apparel hurtling towards financial destruction, but the company just removed five of the nine benches from outside its Orchard Street store. Back in the heady days of 2007, a New York Observer article proclaimed one of the benches “the epicenter of perhaps the hottest ‘anti-scene’ scene on Saturday nights” after a bunch of DJs released a fake press release treating it as a hot new nightspot. (The bench even had—has!—its own MySpace page, although it looks like nobody’s left their mark there since 2008.)”
Whorehouse 3
“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”
After swearing off parties for the better part of a year Contessa asked me to shoot Whorehouse 3, which if you didn’t know is a place where the underground hip hop heads and GBLT scene come to party together. Who else but Contessa and her partner in crime Black Angels founder Promise Smith can bring these scenes together. The above quote from The Godfather 3 kind of sums up how I felt when Contessa asked me to shoot this. I have been avoiding shooting nightlife like the plague. But the truth is as much as I fight it NYC nightlife will always be a part of TheNewPop. Its a big part of our city, so it is a big part of TheNewPop. So when Contessa asked me to do her a favor and shoot Whorehouse 3, I said why not. Plus I loved the theme. But don’t get any ideas about asking me to shoot your party for free. Contessa is a dear friend and she gets the special treatment. I can’t wait to see what these girls do next.
The party was pretty crazy, it seemed like the entire Hip Hop/Punk hybrid scene was there. Just as it started to really kick in and Ninjasonik started to perform the cops pulled the plug. I did manage to grab some good footage before everyone got booted.
Enjoy
Contessa Making Moves!
Looks like they finally coming around to the force that is Cuntmafia. Check out Contessa’s interview and cool photos in tangentmag.com. Thanks for the New Pop shout. She also had a feature in V Mag which I missed. Gotta get a copy.
Congrats!

Elle (Wilhelmina Models) X Fashion Photoshoot

On a hot summers day we trucked a very young Wilhemina model Elle (from Oregon) to my current neighborhood Bushwhick, Brooklyn for a photo-shoot for her look book.
I was inspired by her youth, and her bratty girl looks. I played with a bad girl that can transcend location (from the suburbs to the city), her sex appeal isn’t vulgar, she look sweets & innocent while maintaining her bad girl virtues.

I declare this shoot: DUST

New Pop City
So I just uploaded a video that I shot where most of the fam gathered for a photo shoot for this upcoming book by the KDU’s Phil Knott called “State Of The Moment”. He is documenting creative NYC crews and asked us to come to his studio when we met on The Kid Cudi shoot. This is the most New Pop heads we’ve had in one place at one time so I had to bring the camera out as did Tone and Texas. So check the video and photos. As busy as we all are who knows when we will all get a chance to be in one place at one time like this again.
Fashion and Queer undercurrent at Sway ONCE A MONTH!
What happens when you take ROXY COTTONTAILS biggest “profiling” Hip Hop party and infuse it with Queer hosts (Contessa) and DJ’s (Telfar and Kingdom from MR. BLACK’S CASTLE SATURDAYS) ?!!! You get a melange of “Industry” and/or Underground party people coming out of the wood work.
Typically Sway is known for it’s Mondays Electric Punanni, and Rice and Pea’s but something was missing for fashion hip hop heads.
Adding elements of queer friendly, fashion forward and Industry thinking – we get a balance of crazy partying and the ability (which Sway Mondays was missing for a while) NETWORKING.
With that being said, being involved on a Sway Monday that speaks to me, makes me very happy to be apart of a creative scene.

MY 420 FREESTYLE
So 420 of 2009 was spent smoking mad blunts and freestyling up in Black Crackers music studio in Brooklyn.

CONTESSA and BLACK CRACKER
Black Cracker was forced into making a West Coast stylized beat. She considered it one of the gayest beats she has ever made. You know once the “gay beat” was made, I just went loose. Since I am known for my Freestyles.
