For The New Media Artist in You

New Pop Vintage ’07-’08 – Mean Red

The years between 2007 – 2008 were particularly great for the downtown scene.  Everything seemed new and fresh.  The music, the fashion, the photo/video blogosphere, the art, even the promoters were thinking outside the box finding some of the coolest and most unique spaces to hold events.   It was as if everyone was feeding and informing each others art.  At the center of this new raw energy you would more often than not find the ladies from Mean Red.  They held events at some of the most interesting venues in the city including the legendary now defunct Yard located in Red Hook Brooklyn. It made for some of the best times during those early New Pop party years.  The following video first published in 2008 highlighted some of those great photo/video moments. To this day no one could cover events like our crew.

New Pop Vintage 2007 – Korrupt

When I started shooting back in 2005 youtube compression standards were so horrible I would stay clear of uploading anything there.  It’s different today so I started going through my old videos and uploading them to youtube.  It’s like going through an old album.  So many memories.

Yesterday Tone and I were talking about the days when we were shooting all the time together, and we wondered where did we find the energy.  As Tone put it, nightlife is a seductive world especially for film/photo geeks like us.  It was like nerd crack, it’s not good for you, but it is so much fun.  Trying to ween myself off that lifestyle is tough. Working in the real world it dawned on me that just being cool, or in my case, just knowing cool people won’t cut it.  I actually had to have some skill and professionalism.  I picked up a ton of bad habits shooting nightlife which I am slowly trying to correct. My other filmmaker friends probably laugh at my bad audio and lighting, but I also picked up allot of unique skills and traits that make me unique in the comparatively bland world of commercial filmmaking.  I wouldn’t trade those days in for anything in the world.

In this video from 2007 shot during one of the Mean Red Korrupt parties I was really into these interactive videos because I wanted more than a montage of cool folks being cool. So at this party I asked people to write anything that was on their minds on the “What?” board.  The variety of comments were fascinating to say the least.

URB Mag Special Edition feat Amanda Blank & Maluca

URB magazine teamed up with the girls at Mean Red and put out a special edition Digital Magazine featuring Maluca and Amanda Blank. It was styled by Valissa and photographed by my former partner King Texas. The photos are great, some of the best I have seen from Texas. The interviews are also informative and easy to digest. I do have issues with the Digital Magazine format, and more specifically the page navigation which just doesn’t feel natural. I just think the Digital Magazine format is something that will find it’s home on mobile devices like the one by Bonnier that I blogged about a few weeks back. I prefer to scroll through information traditionally on a web page rather than toy around with the phony page turn and magnifying features. And I wish they had an embed function for the Digital Mag so I wouldn’t have to hyperlink you. Come on coders start slinging. Regardless it’s great to see the folks at URB mag taking chances and pushing the envelope. It’s well worth the read. I posted some screen grabs below, to check out the full feature click here.
