Wayback Thursday’s 2008 – Electric Punnany

This week we take the Wayback machine to August of 2008 and Electric Punanny at Sway.  For a couple of years Sway was the place to be on a Monday night.  Roxy Cottontail who was the personality behind Sway hired my former partner Tone as the in house photographer.  During Tone’s residency Sway went from being a nice mellow place to hang out on Monday’s, to a booze and drug filled affair with some of the dirtiest dancing ever documented on camera.  Eventually Tone partnered with Jasmine Salano and Melo-X to form their own Sway party and called it Electric Punanny.  Spinning a combination of Electro and Reggae that turned up the dial up on grit and grind scale past 11.

Now all this time despite many invites from Tone I had yet to head out to Sway myself.  I just assumed that Sway would always be there and I would get around to it.  Plus after years of seeing this amazing world through Tone’s eyes, I wanted to make sure that if I go I would be ready to tell the story the way I thought it needed to be told.  The resulting video was one in which I captured the dark, grinding, heartbeat that existed inside the walls of Sway, as well as the colorful lively energy that took place right outside it’s doors.  To this date it is one the best event portraits produced on this site.

Wayback Trivia:  In the months following the Electric Punanny video Tone started a video series titled Sway Kids.  It is a brilliant series that captures the world outside of Sway in a non sequitur staccato stream of thought style.  He probably didn’t know it then but this series documents the last days of the golden years (and I do mean years) of that legendary weekly party.

Wayback Thursday’s – Getting To Know You | A Melo-X Dedication Party

This week on Wayback Thursday we rewind the clock to August of 2008 and a party produced by Melo – X titled The Dedication Party. This party was intended to be a part of a series in which Melo would pay tribute to his creative friends.  This particular episode is pretty cool because it features a couple of artists who are blowing up right now.  The first being the host and former New Pop Crew-mate Melo – X (who has toured all over the world with Kid Sister and just got back from Paris promoting his mixtape More Merch), Mickey Factz (featured in the URB Next 100 with us and just recently finished touring with Big Sean), and Theophilus London (who was featured or made cameo’s in a number of New Pop episodes and can now be seen everywhere from MTV to The Tonight Show with David Letterman).

Back in 2008 they were all striving for big things but were rubbing elbows in small places.  This video not only highlights these three artists, but pays tribute to the collage of talented folks that made up this scene.  A big reason I launched TheNewPop was my desire to capture talented people and relevant movements before they evolved into something bigger.  It’s a bit early to confirm that is what’s happening now, but if it isn’t it’s pretty darn close.   Anyway check out this video which actually is the video that gave me the idea for my Getting To Know You series that I started last year and plan to take on the road this spring/summer.

Wayback Trivia: Thenewpop.com was a direct offspring of the website sceneinteractive.com a videocasting site I founded in 2004.  After leaving in 2005 I wanted to take that concept and apply it to musicians and artists. The early newpop videos were not much more than video head shots with artists telling their stories to the camera.  Innovative yes, creative not so much.

New Pop Vintage 2008 – Electric Punnany

Starting in 2007 my former partner Tone was the resident photographer at Sway Monday nights. Mostly due to his photos it went from being a pretty laid back Monday to the place to be.  Everyone went there and they partied hard.  I missed out on all the fun because I pretty much never went out unless I was shooting, as a result my experience was limited to Tone’s photos and internet buzz.  In 2008 I was asked to document the 4th edition of a monthly party called Electric Punany which took place once a month at Sway.  After experiencing Sway on a weekly basis through Tone’s photos I kinda knew what to expect and it did not disappoint.  The night was hot, it was sweaty, it was filled with interesting stories and characters.  From the vintage collection here is Electric Punnany.

An ode to TONE.

Tone (as in PHOTO BY TONE, 1/3 of the founding members of THE NEW POP) has known me for a while. He was around when the ponytail only came to my shoulder. He was around when I started my first weekly with DJ Iron Lyon, DJ Kevy & Melo-X, called THE JAWN in 2007. And he’s known me since back when when I was a full time Production Manager on music videos & sorta still worked at 555-SOUL on Lafayette St. (R.I.P.)

And he’s stuck around. For as long as I’ve known him and as much work as he’s done for me, he STILL hasn’t asked me for a favor or a dime (I apologize if that infuriates some of you). But see I’d take a bullet to save his camera. And I’m pretty sure he’d take a bullet to save my dj laptop. It’s a friendship I value to the most high.

So here’s a little dedication poem about the evolution of “Jazzy + Tone” told through his pictures. Which of course can always be found on www.photobytone.com :)
